Being Intentional with Color

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about color. Not in a strict “art class” kind of way, but more in the way color affects how we feel, what we gravitate toward, and even how inspired we are to work on a project.

I think a lot of us assume we are pretty good at picking colors for projects, but often we have projects that, once we begin, we quickly fall out of love with the colors we have chosen. In this week’s Stash Down video, we’re talking about why that happens. Why do some colors feel off? Why do some energize us to work on a project more? Or why do some have us abandoning our project for something else?

I also share several project examples including my Artisanal Arches blanket, Shawlography, and Sophie’s Universe, along with some of the ways I pull inspiration from indie dyers, paint chips, fashion, interiors, nature, and even everyday moments.

One thing I’ve really realized through working through my stash is that color is not random. There are reasons certain palettes feel calming, dramatic, nostalgic, cozy, or energetic. And once we start paying attention to those things, choosing colors becomes a lot less overwhelming.

I’d love to know: what kinds of color palettes are you naturally drawn to lately? Have you ever made a project with colors you thought shouldn’t work together… but somehow ended up loving anyway?
