My Little Getaway Room

what you see when you walk in the room...
A few summers ago, after we made the big decision to send our oldest to public school, our homeschool room began a little transformation. What used to be school central started becoming my craft room — my little getaway.

This space wasn’t huge, and it wasn’t perfect, but it was mine. A place where yarn, books, tools, and ideas all had a home. And honestly? That made all the difference.

Walking Into the Room

When you step through the door, the first thing you see is a pair of tall bookcases — the backbone of the room’s storage. I picked them up from Walmart back then: two 5-shelf units and one smaller 3-shelf unit that I adjusted myself with a few screws and simple cuts. These shelves weren’t fancy, but they were sturdy and flexible, which is exactly what I needed.

Across those shelves you’ll find:

  • Acrylics tucked into purple drawers, perfect for seeing colors at a glance.

  • Cotton yarn in crisp white bins and wools nestled in gray storage bins, each sorted so I could pull the right yarn without digging through a jumbled pile.

  • Leftover cakes and hooks, all within easy reach for those spontaneous crochet sessions.

  • Buttons, clay tools, stitch markers, knitting needles, books, and magazines — every tiny piece of inspiration tucked into its own nook on the top shelves.

Those bookcases weren’t just shelves — they became visual reminders of the creativity waiting to be pulled down and put to work.

From Schoolroom to Sanctuary

Because this room still served as a homework space for my youngest, I didn’t go all out with it. But that imperfect mix of school books and yarn, baskets and patterns? That’s part of what made it so special. It was functional without feeling sterile — cozy enough that I wanted to create there, and flexible enough that it could grow with me.

It was in this room that I first felt that spring crafting spark return — the urge to organize and breathe new life into my stash, which eventually turned into the bigger refresh I wrote about in Spring Fever. Just like those shelves in the getaway room helped me see my yarn clearly, taking the time to sort and re-think my space helped me see projects instead of piles.

What I Learned From This Space

That little craft room taught me:

  • A creative space doesn’t need to be perfect — it just needs personality and purpose.

  • Even simple shelving can become a place of inspiration when it’s organized with heart.

  • And sometimes, rediscovering what you already have is the first step toward loving your space again — whether it’s a whole room or just a corner of a bookcase.

I’d love to hear how your craft space has evolved — big or small! Share your stories or photos in the comments; nothing warms my heart more than seeing where you stitch and create. 💛Happy Hooking,

Kim

    1. I wish it was just mine but it also acts as the "school room" that I will be doing preschool in with our youngest and "homework room" for our oldest you starts Kindergarten this year.
